Isaiah 61:3 says, To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified . Simply stated, God will turn your sorrow into joy. Endure until your change comes. It may tarry, but It will surely come.

The main character, Ruth Samuelsson, chronicles her life, telling the story of the people and events that lead to her faithless existence. The story was written in the first person to entice readers into sharing the emotional roller coaster, that is her life; believing that many readers will see fragments of their own story within the pages. My desire is that her triumphs become their very victories.

My reading team, which included family, friends and acquaintances, provided invaluable feedback throughout the process. For my first book, they were my teachers. Every critique taught me a lesson about writing; “You need to be more descriptive so I can envision the character”, “What time period is this because young people today don’t talk like this now”, “Non-Christians won’t understand that reference”. I picked people who would be brutally honest with me, and few nice folks, just in case in needed encouragement. But the tough critiques are the ones that make your work great. Solicit constructive feedback from people you trust, before you release your project.

TODAY'S QUESTION...WHAT KIND OF RESEARCH DID YOU DO FOR THE BOOKS?
Briefly stated, the writing format for Darkest Before Dawn went in a totally different direction from the first book. As a new author, I found it difficult to write in the first person. When there are other characters in a piece, it is harder to show their voice or point of view if they aren’t even in the room. Darkest Before Dawn, was written in the third person and goes backward to introduce each and every main character’s story in the series. It’s a “meet and greet” for the readers and the characters of the series, exposing their fragilities, while answering questions that remained from the cliffhanger in the first installment. |
